About our Tutors

All of our tutors are qualified and experienced teachers. They hold a degree and a teaching qualification. Many of them are native speakers. It is part of the tutor’s role to find the exact course for you. Often the first session involves finding out what your exact requirements are  and what you know already.

Your tutor will act in a slightly different way from a teacher. One issue he/she will discus with you is how much time you can spend on your learning in between lessons. They will show you a way to work effectively. Part of each session will be spent reviewing what you learnt before and setting up new goals for the next session. You have every opportunity to get what you want from your tutor.

Preparing for A-level

This is a six hour course which takes place on one day, usually in July or August, but can be taken at other times, on request. We start at 10:00 a.m. and finish at 4:30 p.m. We have a short break in the morning, and a working lunch. Tea and coffee is provided, but participants bring their own lunch. A maximum of six students work together. Sometimes, you may be on your own. Each “Preparation for A-Level” course is language specific, though if you are going to study more than one language AS or A-level, you would probably only need to take the course in one language – perhaps your weakest.

Each student is provided with their own A4 folder, with all course notes and room for their own notes.

The course covers:

Problems you may encounter in moving from GCSE to A-level

The tools you may need

How to improve your writing

A crash course in grammar

How to read like a native speaker

Ways of getting free speaking practice

Using the media to support your work.

We usually break for half an hour for lunch – and speak for the whole time in the target language.

Corporate Lessons

Give your employees the opportunity to learn a foreign language at their work place. These can be fitted into the working day at any time, though you might consider a breakfast, lunch or twilight meeting. A tutor will discuss your exact needs with you, and will decide which would be the best type of course to follow. They will probably recommend a course book, which we may be able to purchase at a discount price for you. We will provide photocopies, audio equipment and tapes. We ask you to provide a comfortable environment in which to work.

Cost: £300 for 10 sessions, plus an initial cost of £5.00 per student for the manual. Groups can be between two and twenty people. We recommend that courses should be at least 30 weeks long, with the exception of “Get By” Courses. Corporate lessons are usually invoiced to your firm.

Private and Small Group Lessons

Our tutors can give lessons at any level in most languages. The first session with your tutor is a chance for you to make your needs known. Your tutor would probably recommend a course book which they are going to work with. You provide your own copy of the course book, but your tutor provides tapes and photocopies. How much you pay depends on your level, whether you work on your own or in a group, and whether you go to your tutor or they go to you.

If you work alone the costs per hour are as outlined below.

Pre-GCSE and “Get By” – £20

GCSE – £20

A-level and above – £25

If the tutor comes to you, you pay an extra £2.50 or £5.00, depending on how far they have to travel.

You may work in groups of two to six people. The fee then remains the same, although you may be asked to contribute towards cost of photocopying.

Payment for individual sessions should be to the tutor at the end of each session. Group lessons should be booked in advance in sets of five, through Bridge House Languages. We do have facilities for paying by credit card.

Language by phone

Too busy to attend evening classes? You don’t want to be caught in the rush hour or have a stranger coming into your home? You may have lots of free minutes left on your mobile phone? You get free local calls? Your firm will pay for your course?

We put you in touch with a tutor. The tutor will telephone you initially, to discuss with you what is required. Then, or in a subsequent phone call, they may recommend a course book you need to purchase. They will post any tapes or photocopies to you. After that, you telephone them for your lesson, which lasts half an hour. You will review last week’s work, discuss new topics, often related to your course book, set up new objectives for the next lesson and arrange a time and date for next lesson. We recommend half hour slots, as learning by phone is so concentrated. Some students elect to have two half hour sessions per week.

Cost: £10 per half hour, all levels. You may book five lessons at a time with us by phone, and pay by credit card, or book by post and pay by credit card or cheque.
